EMPIRE OF GOLD GETS THE BEST OF SUPER OCHO
IN THE SAM’S TOWN STAKES AT DELTA DOWNS

SON OF GOLDENCENTS RECORDS FASTEST FIVE FURLONG TIME OF THE SEASON

VINTON, LA. – Speed was on display at Delta Downs Saturday night as the track hosted the $75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes at five furlongs for older horses. The race featured last year’s sixth-place finisher from the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), Super Ocho, who went as the odds-on favorite.

Although Super Ocho set the early pace he could not fend off a late rally by Johnny B. Evans and Terry Eoff’s charge Empire of Gold, who stormed home to victory under jockey Lane Luzzi. The final running time for the Terry Eoff trainee was the fastest of the meet so far, 57.40 seconds. The race was contested over a fast track.

After the Sam’s Town field of seven broke well it wasn’t long before Super Ocho took command up the backstretch and stopped the timer in 21.96 seconds for the first quarter mile. Super Ocho maintained the lead into the stretch and was clocked in 44.95 for the half-mile. At that point Empire of Gold rallied alongside the leader entering the final furlong and put him away at the finish line, winning the race by 1-1/2 lengths. Prizeless, who ran close to the pace throughout, finished third another 1-1/2 lengths behind the top pair.

Empire of Gold has now won seven of 29 career starts. He earned $45,000 for his exploits on Saturday and now owns a bankroll of $549,136.

Bred in Kentucky by W C Racing, Empire of Gold is a 6-year-old bay horse by Goldencents, who won the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) in 2012. He is out of the Empire Maker mare Empire Diva.

Sent off at odds of 2-1, Empire of Gold paid $6 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Super Ocho was worth $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Prizeless paid $2.10 to show.

Delta Downs will race each Wednesday through Saturday until the end of its 2022-23 Thoroughbred season on February 25. Post times change next week however, as the first race each day will now go off at 4:55 pm.
